Dissertation

In my dissertation, I investigate the network of organizations engaged in protest activities over a 35 year period in New York State. My motivating question is: How does the network, as a contextual element in which organizations operate, influence the probability that a social movement organization (SMO) will adopt a new tactic? I also describe the network of SMOs and its changes over time.

Other Research

Current research outside of my dissertation, most of which is collaborative, focuses on how research methods impact our understanding of social phenomena. Examples of this line of research include: developing and testing automated methods for identifying cases of the spread of ideas from one social movement to another; and using machine learning and other techniques to improve our measurement of how interdisciplinary universities are.

Research Assistance

In addition to my personal research agenda, I have also participated as a research assistant on the projects listed below. Specific tasks related to this work include: developing and implementing coding schema; data collection; managing undergraduate research assistants; maintaining a high degree of intercoder reliability; extensive data cleaning, quality checks, and management in Stata; writing memos and reports; documenting coding and data management decisions; vetting and conducting analyses; collaborating with local and remote teams; automation of routine tasks; developing and maintaining an organized file architecture; leading meetings and presentations; and preparing and labeling text documents for machine learning.
